Jos Verstappen has broken his silence to defend the character and personality of his son, four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, stating that the Dutch driver is often misunderstood. Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the 52-year-old former Formula 1 driver explained that his son’s personality has not changed despite his extraordinary success at the highest level of motorsport.
He emphasised that when he meets or speaks with Max Verstappen in private, he still sees exactly the same person he knew a decade or even fifteen years ago. According to Jos, this continuity in character is something both important and admirable, and he expressed his pride in the fact that fame and achievement have not altered his son’s nature.
However, Jos Verstappen believes that the public perception of the Red Bull driver — particularly in the United Kingdom — is often misguided. He argued that many people, and perhaps especially British fans, have formed an inaccurate impression of the reigning world champion, viewing him as arrogant or even as an unpleasant figure. Jos suggested that this distorted image may also be the result of the current era dominated by social media, where narratives can be exaggerated or taken out of context. He made it clear that he does not recognise this negative portrayal of his son and does not identify with it in any way.
