For motorsport fans, Jochen Mass evokes an era of success and memories of a champion who helped shape F1 history with talent and elegance.
Mass competed in 114 Formula 1 Grands Prix, securing eight podium finishes and earning a place of honour among the key figures of the 1970s and 1980s. But his career went far beyond the F1 circuits: his talent led him to dominate endurance racing as well, with 32 victories in sports prototype championships driving for Alfa Romeo, Porsche and Sauber-Mercedes.
His relationship with Michael Schumacher and the Villeneuve accident
His name is also unfortunately linked to a dramatic moment: in 1982, he was involved in the fatal accident of Gilles Villeneuve during qualifying for the Belgian GP. It was an event that deeply marked the paddock and the life of the German driver, who was nonetheless always remembered for his fair racing style and sensitivity.
In addition to being a driver, Jochen Mass was also a mentor: in his final years with Sauber, he contributed to the development of young talents, including a very young Michael Schumacher, who would go on to write Formula 1 history.
For Schumacher, Mass was a quiet but valuable guide. Their careers crossed paths between the late 1980s and early 1990s, racing together in the 1990 SportsCar championship. Schumacher learned the art of tyre management from Mass and always considered him a point of reference.
In 1995, when Schumacher was about to leave Benetton, he called Mass for advice on which team to join next. At first, Mass suggested Williams, seemingly the safest choice, but then changed his mind: “If you win with Williams, the credit will go to the car. If you win with Ferrari, the credit will be yours,” he told him. That phone call pushed Schumacher toward the Prancing Horse, sparking one of the most legendary stories of redemption and triumph in modern Formula 1.
From 1993 to 1997, he also lent his voice and expertise as a commentator for RTL, bringing his love for racing into German homes.
His family remembered him with emotional words: “Today we mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather, and racing legend. But we also celebrate a life lived to the fullest, which he loved sharing with all of you. Now he’s racing again with his friends.”
Jochen Mass leaves a void in the hearts of fans, but also a legacy built on sportsmanship, dedication, and respect for speed.
