Williams is currently struggling in the 2026 championship, but team principal James Vowles has stepped in to strongly defend and highlight the outstanding qualities of two drivers he considers to be top-class talents. Speaking to the team’s official media channels, James Vowles wanted to send a clear message of support and unity.
“Two brilliant drivers. I am really, really fortunate in that respect. No politics, no ego. They could have an ego, but they don’t. They give absolutely everything, and they want Williams to succeed just as much as I do. Their commitment goes far beyond simply driving the car.”
He also singled out Carlos Sainz’s technical contribution and communication skills with the engineers:
“In Carlos’s case, his communication with the engineers is the best I have ever worked with. He has this ability to transmit exactly what he feels in the car on track and connect it directly with the data at the same time.”
Vowles also praised Alexander Albon’s adaptability, particularly in changing and unpredictable conditions:
“With Alex, he has this natural ability, especially in changing conditions — as we saw in Melbourne and on other occasions — to extract the maximum from himself and from the car. What I would say about Carlos and Alex is that they go beyond that: they carry no baggage. They want the team to be strong. And as a result, whether they have had a good day or not, the best example I can give you is that Alex was standing next to me on the podium when Carlos was there.”
James Vowles’ staunch defense of his driver pairing underlines the internal stability Williams enjoys despite their current technical hurdles. By highlighting the selfless nature and technical feedback of both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, James Vowles is reminding the paddock that while the car may currently be lacking, the human element at Grove is operating at a world-class level. This unity will be essential as the team works to resolve their early-season performance deficit and climb back into the points-paying positions.
