Helmut Marko has linked his departure from Red Bull to Max Verstappen’s failure to secure a fifth consecutive world championship, a milestone that would have matched Michael Schumacher’s historic dominance at Ferrari. Despite stepping away from his official role, Marko continues to remain involved in Formula 1 as an ambassador for the Austrian Grand Prix, occasionally offering advice to former colleagues. Speaking to the media, he clarified the reasons behind his exit, highlighting both regret and his perspective on the future.
“No. The reason was my disappointment about not winning the World Championship in 2025. I wanted to draw my own conclusions from that. Well, it would have been our fifth consecutive world title; only Michael Schumacher achieved that with Ferrari. It was a huge disappointment.”
Marko also reflected on past experiences with drivers he has worked with, recalling Sebastian Vettel’s mentality during his early career:
“When Vettel was sitting in front of me at that table in my office, he had just won 18 out of 20 races in Formula BMW. He was unhappy about not winning the other two. I remember that relentless determination.”
He then drew a comparison with Max Verstappen’s mindset and development:
“Verstappen gave the impression that the mind of a 25-year-old man was trapped inside the body of a 15-year-old. Max had a very clear goal, partly thanks to the extremely effective and strict training he received from his father.”
Helmut Marko’s decision to step away from his prominent role at Red Bull underscores the high-stakes environment where second place is often viewed as a failure. By tying his legacy to the pursuit of a fifth straight title, Marko highlights the relentless ambition that defined the Max Verstappen era. While the 2025 season did not deliver the historic milestone he craved, his reflections on the psychological makeup of champions like Vettel and Verstappen serve as a final testament to his unparalleled eye for talent in the paddock.
