Villeneuve: Verstappen drives at the level of F1 legends
After the Baku qualifying session, it was clear that among all the top drivers, Max Verstappen was the only one who didn’t make a mistake in such a delicate session. Some fans commented that his flawless performance was proof that he is the only true superstar on the grid today. Jacques Villeneuve shares this view.
“Max Verstappen is a genius. He drives the way a world champion should. He drives at that level. If you think back to the golden era with Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, and Nelson Piquet, they all drove like this—one against another. That’s the level you want in Formula 1. It’s the level you have to show,” Villeneuve told OLBG. “If Max Verstappen wins the Drivers’ Championship, it will undoubtedly be his greatest achievement ever. This year, he is clearly superior to the others because he wasn’t even supposed to be in contention. He is without a doubt the best of his generation. Unfortunately, at the moment, there’s only one at that level. It’s a bit sad.”
Villeneuve highlights a rising rookie: Gabriel Bortoleto
While praising Max Verstappen, Jacques Villeneuve also pointed to a new talent to watch in Formula 1: Gabriel Bortoleto. “A rookie who is really impressing me right now is Bortoleto. He started in a fairly competitive way, then stepped back and took the time needed to learn, to observe what Nico Hulkenberg was doing. In every race, he takes a small step forward, improves, and stays focused. I’m curious to see how far he can go,” said Villeneuve.
Jacques Villeneuve’s comments underline the contrast between the unmatched brilliance of Verstappen and the careful development of promising newcomers, suggesting that F1 fans have both an established superstar to admire and rising talent to follow closely in the seasons ahead.
