The Big Anticipation for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s F1 Debut
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s debut in F1 with Mercedes is sparking debate, and not just because the 18-year-old is expected to take over the wheel once driven by a sport legend like Lewis Hamilton for 12 years. The very young Italian talent indeed surprised everyone with his path to the higher levels of motorsport, but he disappointed – partly due to the struggles of the Prema Racing team adapting to the challenging transition to the new generation of cars – in his single season in Formula 2. Even Jacques Villeneuve has expressed doubts about Antonelli’s ability to be immediately fast and competitive in F1.
Jacques Villeneuve’s Comment
“I think it’s too soon for Andrea Kimi Antonelli,” said the 1997 world champion in an interview with yaysweepstakes.com. “He had a terrible season in Formula 2, maybe because he had already signed for F1 and the pressure got to him, or maybe because he didn’t like that type of car. But who knows? These are all question marks that we’ll find out very soon. He seems like a driver who’s capable of taking risks and pushing, but we still don’t know where his limit is. Or how he will work to develop and evolve the Mercedes. Will there be harmony with George Russell? Will their driving styles be similar or completely opposite, which will make it difficult for the team to develop the car in a direction that satisfies both?” – he pointed out.
“Many newspapers,” he continued, “want Kimi Antonelli to be amazing, and I hope he is because if not, it will be a heavy burden to carry. He has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Toto took him on when he was 12, when they started funding his karting career. It’s a long relationship that started back then, and when you take a 12-year-old under your wing, it’s like a father-son relationship. So it’s possible his decision-making was a little skewed… He’s certainly been very fast in all categories, but not in F2, so we’ll have to find out. They’ve invested a lot in him, even financially, for many years. It’s hard to reach the point of realizing that maybe he’s not good enough.” – the former Formula 1 driver added.
Valtteri Bottas is Not Better Than Kimi Antonelli
However, Jacques Villeneuve doesn’t believe that Valtteri Bottas, who has been the new third driver for Mercedes in recent weeks, will be Mercedes’ plan B in case the 18-year-old doesn’t prove ready for F1: “Is Bottas really better than Antonelli? It doesn’t matter if he has more experience. If you look at last season… When you’re not fast, you’re not fast! They took a risk and bet on him because they deeply wanted him to be ready, rather than relying on last year’s results. They made a decision and will ensure that decision succeeds. But he has everything in his hands to prove he’s good. Let’s just hope that last season was only an abnormal one for Kimi Antonelli.” – Jacques Villeneuve concluded.
