His seat had been unstable for months. Jack Doohan was aware he had a temporary contract with Alpine, so the news of his departure and the subsequent arrival of Franco Colapinto likely wasn’t a surprise even to him. The Australian driver had six races (plus last year’s Abu Dhabi GP) to prove he deserved to be confirmed alongside Pierre Gasly.
However, he scored zero points in this early part of the season, and despite some good performances, Flavio Briatore opted for a change ahead of the Imola weekend. A change that had been in the air for some time but only became official after the Miami Grand Prix.
Jack Doohan’s words after the departure announcement
After the official announcement, Jack Doohan commented on the news, thanking the team for the support he received in recent months. “I’m really proud to have had the chance to fulfill my dream of being a Formula 1 driver. For that, I’ll always be grateful to the team for helping me achieve it. Obviously, this decision is not easy to accept since, as a driver, I still want to race,” said the second-generation driver.
“Despite that, I appreciate the trust the team placed in me. We have long-term goals to achieve, and I will continue to contribute to that. For now, I’ll keep working hard, looking ahead to the next five races and continuing to fight for my personal goals,” Jack Doohan added.
In the statement published by Alpine, it’s confirmed that Franco Colapinto will drive for the next five races. At the end of this period, the French team will carry out new evaluations before choosing the best driver pairing for the future. The goal, as suggested between the lines, remains to be as prepared as possible for 2026, with the new regulations representing an opportunity not to be missed.
