There is no more hiding. The first day of free practice at the Australian Grand Prix concluded with the two McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri closely following Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, despite some balance issues.
The first two hours of running at Albert Park partially confirmed what had emerged from testing in Bahrain. Ferrari and McLaren appear to be leading the pack, with the Scuderia closing some of the gap seen during the three days in Sakhir. Behind them, Mercedes struggled with driver errors, while Red Bull continues to face difficulties.
Qualifying will ultimately reveal the true pecking order, although the weather could play a major role in the remaining sessions. Rain is expected in the coming days, potentially making the race less predictable than anticipated.
Lando Norris Reveals McLaren’s Problems
“I think we will be strong, but so will Ferrari and Mercedes. We just have to wait and see who comes out on top,” Lando Norris said at the end of the first day in Melbourne. “The weekend has started fairly well. We have a good baseline, but I wouldn’t say I’m happy.” – the British driver pointed out.
“We haven’t yet found the right balance, and we haven’t been consistent, especially with low fuel. I feel better when the fuel load is higher, but for now, there are too many inconsistencies, too many problems. I’d say we struggled a bit today,” the British driver concluded.
