Is Max Verstappen still the favorite for 2026? Ralf Schumacher weights in on F1’s new era. Ralf Schumacher believes Max Verstappen remains the benchmark for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.

Ralf Schumacher, 2024

Ralf Schumacher has made his position clear: in Formula 1, the ultimate reference point on the grid is still Max Verstappen.

With the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship fast approaching, early predictions about the title fight are already gaining momentum. According to the former F1 driver, when discussing potential championship contenders, the name of Max Verstappen continues to stand above the rest. Ralf Schumacher analyzed the competitive landscape ahead of the new season, stressing that the true pecking order will only become clear after the opening rounds. In his view, the start of the campaign will be crucial in understanding which driver-car combination truly has the strongest overall package.

Verstappen remains the benchmark for the 2026 F1 World Championship

Schumacher explained that the first three races on the calendar will provide decisive indications about the balance of power, while also acknowledging the encouraging progress shown by Mercedes and Ferrari during winter testing. “After the overseas races, the first three of the season, we will have a good feeling about who is ahead and who is not,” he stated.

The German also praised Mercedes’ driver pairing and the potential displayed by Ferrari in testing, mentioning Charles Leclerc among the expected protagonists of the 2026 F1 season. “Mercedes now has two high-level drivers like George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. They have the best chances because the car looked strong and fast from the very beginning. The same applies to Charles Leclerc and Ferrari,” he added.

Schumacher: “Verstappen remains in a league of his own”

Despite the clear progress made by rival teams, Ralf Schumacher was keen to tone down any excessive enthusiasm. For him, Max Verstappen continues to represent the absolute benchmark in terms of pure talent and overall performance.

“Max Verstappen is, of course, in a category of his own, but we will have to see how strong the combination between driver and car will be,” he concluded.

Interestingly, however, when asked to name a potential favorite for the 2026 World Championship, Ralf Schumacher chose a slightly different path. The former Williams driver pointed to young Mercedes talent Kimi Antonelli as a possible surprise in the title race, suggesting that the rising star could emerge as a serious contender if the Silver Arrows deliver a competitive package from the very start of the season.

Ralf Schumacher’s assessment highlights the fascinating tension at the start of this new technical era: the undeniable individual brilliance of Max Verstappen versus the revitalized engineering of teams like Mercedes and Ferrari. While Verstappen remains the driver to beat in terms of raw capability, the uncertainty surrounding the 2026 power units and chassis regulations means that the field is more open than it has been in years. Schumacher’s bold tip for Kimi Antonelli suggests that we might be on the verge of a historic changing of the guard, provided the silver arrows can deliver a car capable of challenging Red Bull’s star.
