Beyond the drivers, engineers and team principals are also major players in the market: currently, all eyes are on Christian Horner, whose time with Red Bull seems to be nearing its end. Since 2005, the Briton has served as team principal of the squad—a central figure whose position now appears to be wavering.
According to reports in recent days from GP Blog, Horner has been having several conversations with Flavio Briatore, with a possible move to Alpine as team principal in sight. After Oliver Oakes‘ departure, the Enstone-based team is searching for a strong profile to lead them, and the Red Bull boss has all the qualities needed for the role.
A mutually beneficial partnership?
If this were to happen, it would be an extremely advantageous connection for both sides: Alpine could benefit from Christian Horner’s experience, while he would have the opportunity to start fresh in a team where the pressure—and the atmosphere—is markedly different. While Red Bull is under intense strain to bring Max Verstappen back to the top of the grid, Alpine is laying the foundation for an ambitious long-term project.
A shared goal but with different timelines: leaving a team that feels like a second family is never easy, but finding a path where the pros outweigh the cons is certainly tempting. We’ll just have to wait and see how this story unfolds—whether Horner’s position at Red Bull is truly in jeopardy, and whether the rumors of an imminent move to Alpine are well-founded. In the meantime, a reminder that Formula 1 returns to action this week in Montreal for the tenth round of the season.
