Does Jack Doohan already have his days numbered at Alpine? The media pressure on the young Australian is sky-high, as we mentioned a few weeks ago. The signing of Franco Colapinto as a test driver and reserve pilot is certainly not a coincidence.
The Argentine, called upon to replace the disappointing Logan Sargeant at Williams last year, has drawn everyone’s attention. To rebuild a team like Alpine, Flavio Briatore also needs a pair of solid drivers. For this reason, Doohan will have to prove he can give a hard time to his more experienced teammate Pierre Gasly.
The Frenchman stated that this year’s goal is “to finish among the top five, and that’s within our reach.” So it’s logical to expect a lot from this lineup. However, there are many doubts.
Jack Doohan has so far raced in only one Grand Prix, the one in Abu Dhabi. Starting seventeenth, the Australian crossed the finish line having gained two positions.
An expert in the paddock like Johnny Herbert (who these days is in the eye of the storm after being fired as an FIA steward) analyzed the thorny situation in the French team.
“I have the feeling that Jack Doohan thinks he’s already on loan at Alpine. When I talk to people in the paddock, everyone thinks exactly the same,” he told Casinoutanspelpaus.io. “Doohan must give his best against Gasly. And if he doesn’t, if he doesn’t deliver, I know Flavio Briatore very well. He’ll be out in the blink of an eye. Right now, [Doohan] is very tense.”
Pierre Gasly has a long-term contract and feels very comfortable at Alpine. “It all depends on Doohan,” Herbert continued. “He will be under enormous pressure because Franco Colapinto will be there, at the back of the garage near Flavio Briatore, watching everything. And that’s where all those small details that spark doubt come into play. And that’s something you absolutely don’t want.”
