Since the Formula 1 summer break, Red Bull has officially returned to contention for the Drivers’ Championship and the second spot in the Constructors’ standings. Here’s what has changed.
Max Verstappen has dramatically cut his gap to the championship lead, reducing it from 104 to 36 points in just a few races. At the top of the drivers’ standings, after the Mexico Grand Prix, sits Lando Norris, closely followed by his teammate Oscar Piastri. During this F1 season, Red Bull has undergone significant changes, including the replacement of team principal Christian Horner with Laurent Mekies.
Driver Sebastien Buemi, in an exclusive interview with Racingnews365, shared his perspective on Red Bull’s 2025 F1 season, providing an insider view of the team.
The turning point
According to Buemi, a combination of factors and small details may have made the difference, helping the Milton Keynes team regain a strong level of performance. “I’ve known Mekies for 15 years. He’s an incredible person and has been in F1 for a long time. He has experience in major organizations, like Ferrari. It’s obviously hard for me to pinpoint exactly, but I think it’s a combination of factors. Laurent [Mekies] is here, but the performance has also returned, so the mood in the team is incredible,” Sebastien Buemi explained.
He added: “People are pushing harder than I’ve ever seen. So it’s very difficult to say exactly what he brought specifically. But in some way, he and certain updates together have created an amazing environment.” Red Bull remains one of the few teams continuing to develop its car actively. One particular upgrade, which appears to have significantly boosted the team’s performance, was introduced at Monza.
Sebastien Buemi did not go into full detail, but he admitted: “I don’t know if I can say without revealing things I shouldn’t! Those small changes allowed the team to push the car’s setup further in certain areas. Essentially, it gave more grip.”
