The Formula 1 championship arrives at the final race of the season with three drivers still in contention for the world title. Lando Norris leads with 408 points after the F1 Qatar GP, followed by Max Verstappen on 396 and Oscar Piastri on 392. Norris has a solid advantage, but not enough to be mathematically safe. Here are all the combinations for Norris, Verstappen and Piastri to become F1 world champion in Abu Dhabi.
Norris champion in Abu Dhabi if…
Norris becomes champion in many scenarios. Verstappen must not recover 13 points, and Piastri must not recover 17 points.
These are the clearest scenarios:
- Norris is champion if he finishes in the top three. A podium guarantees that no one can overtake him.
- Norris is champion if he finishes fourth and Verstappen does not win.
- Norris is champion if Verstappen finishes fourth or worse. Even with zero points, Norris stays ahead of him.
- Norris is champion if Piastri does not finish in the top two. In that case, Lando only needs to finish inside the points.
Specific scenarios:
- Norris fourth with 420 points: Verstappen can reach 421 only by winning. If Max does not win, Norris is champion.
- Norris fifth with 418: Verstappen must win to overtake him. Piastri can reach 417 with third place.
- Norris sixth with 416: Piastri becomes champion only by winning. Verstappen also needs a win.
- Norris seventh with 414: Verstappen passes him only if he wins. Piastri also needs a win.
- Norris eighth with 412: Verstappen must win. Piastri must win.
- Norris ninth with 410: Verstappen must win. Piastri must win.
- Norris tenth with 409: Verstappen must win. Piastri must win.
How Verstappen becomes the 2025 F1 champion
For Verstappen, the situation is straightforward. He must finish at least in the top three to keep his title hopes alive. Only then can he reach 421 points. After that, he needs a weak result from Norris.
Possible combinations:
- Verstappen is champion if he wins and Norris finishes fourth or worse.
- If Verstappen finishes second, Norris must finish seventh or worse.
- Piastri’s position matters only if the Australian wins. In that case, Max is automatically out.
How Piastri becomes Formula 1 world champion
Piastri must recover 17 points from Norris. This means one simple thing:
Piastri must win in Abu Dhabi, or he must finish second and Norris must fail to score.
With a victory, Piastri reaches 417 points.
Then, two conditions must be met:
- Norris must finish sixth or worse. With sixth place, Norris reaches 416.
- Verstappen must not win and must finish behind Piastri.
Possible scenarios for Piastri:
- Piastri wins and Norris finishes sixth or worse while Verstappen does not win. In that case, the Australian becomes champion.
- If Piastri does not win, he is out of the title fight.
