Amid mistakes, incidents, and flashes of talent, Gabriel Bortoleto finishes his first year in Formula 1 taking to heart the advice of Max Verstappen.
Among the rookie drivers who completed their debut season in Formula 1, Gabriel Bortoleto is certainly one of the most challenged. While he showed glimpses of a potential champion, several setbacks affected his morale. For example, the Brazilian endured a particularly difficult home Grand Prix weekend in front of his fans and family.
It is true, however, that mistakes are part of a driver’s growth journey, and that achieving results can overshadow serious incidents or earlier zero-point finishes. This is more or less what the twenty-one-year-old, who Audi has bet on for a successful future, managed to do.
Moreover, Bortoleto benefited from the advice of a driver who has been named by all rookies as the “Dad of the rookies.” In fact, cameras have often captured Max Verstappen spending time with young drivers, ready to dispense guidance that perhaps he never received during his early years in Formula 1.
Bortoleto on Max Verstappen: “The best advice I got from Max? Here it is”
“During the season I received many pieces of advice, and I think it is hard to choose just one. I will tell you the most recent. Max reminded me that this was my first season and that I had already shown a lot. Therefore, I shouldn’t worry too much if I made mistakes,” the Brazilian stated.
“Mistakes are the moments when you improve the most, and everyone makes them sooner or later. I shouldn’t get discouraged, but instead learn and move forward,” added the Audi driver. “After all, this is advice that many people usually give, but if you hear it from someone who has achieved so many milestones in this sport, then it has a completely different value,” concluded Bortoleto, praising Max Verstappen.
It is a simple, almost obvious lesson, yet it becomes decisive when pronounced by someone who has already climbed every peak in Formula 1. And it is precisely from this point that Gabriel Bortoleto will need to restart in 2026 – with the awareness that his rookie season, with all the difficulties and contradictions he experienced, represents a foundation rather than a failure.
Next year, the Brazilian will be called to transform mistakes into methodology and flashes of talent into consistency. Audi has invested in him – taking him from McLaren – with a long-term vision, and now it will be up to Gabriel Bortoleto to demonstrate that he has fully absorbed the lessons of his first year in Formula 1.
As the 2026 season approaches, the spotlight will intensify on Gabriel Bortoleto to see if he can deliver on the promise that convinced Audi to make him a cornerstone of their new project. With the “Dad of the rookies” providing a steadying influence, the young Brazilian no longer carries the weight of perfection, but rather the drive to evolve. If he can pair his natural speed with the mental resilience Verstappen has championed, Gabriel Bortoleto may well move from being a student of the grid to one of its leading protagonists, proving that even the most difficult rookie years are often the essential forge for a future champion.
