Villeneuve believes rivalry with Verstappen helped Norris win title
The 2025 Formula 1 season delivered a new world champion: Lando Norris. The British driver, racing for McLaren, clinched his first championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, ending Max Verstappen’s streak as he chased a fifth consecutive title. With a third-place finish in the final race and a two-point lead over his Red Bull rival in the standings, Norris wrote a historic chapter for both his career and the Woking-based team.
Highlighting the significance of this achievement is Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula 1 world champion, who analyzed Norris’ growth in the second half of the season.
Villeneuve: “Focusing on Max made him stronger”
According to the Canadian, the key to Norris’ success was his direct challenge against Max Verstappen. “Norris fought hard last year and didn’t win. Once this year he focused on battling Verstappen, he drove better. It’s different when you fight against a teammate versus a driver from another team. It’s a different approach. Lando seems much stronger when racing against Max,” Jacques Villeneuve told a betting website.
The former champion also noted that Norris’ season took a decisive turn after a challenging start. “This year, his first part, apart from Melbourne, was insignificant. Baku was a wake-up call. From that point on, he drove superbly.”
Lando Norris’ world championship is not just the culmination of a long-awaited talent, but also a demonstration of how determination and the ability to overcome challenges can shape the outcome of an entire season. His 2025 campaign reflects the growth of a young driver learning to thrive under pressure, with his focus on Verstappen playing a pivotal role in his breakthrough.
With Lewis Hamilton now at Ferrari and fresh faces rising through the ranks, the stage is set for even more epic battles ahead. For now, though, Lando Norris can celebrate a hard-earned crown – one that, according to Villeneuve, owes much to the fire sparked by competing against the very best.
