Helmut Marko’s recent interview with Kleine Zeitung caused a bit of an uproar, especially on social media. In the interview, Helmut Marko appeared to reveal that Adrian Newey didn’t want Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull due to an incident that ruined a race for Max Verstappen.
Fuel was added to the fire by Amanda Newey, the wife of the British engineer.
Amanda Newey denies Helmut Marko’s claims
Under the post sharing the news, Amanda commented sharply: “This doesn’t make sense, he was on gardening leave🙄,” emphasizing that, during that time, Adrian was already on leave from Red Bull, so it was unlikely that he had any say in decisions regarding the 2025 driver lineup.
An impulsive comment that sparked numerous interactions. Many fans pointed out that Helmut Marko never explicitly said Adrian Newey was against Yuki Tsunoda, but that he merely recounted an incident between Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda that occurred during the 2022 Silverstone GP.
When a headline misleads, or maybe not…
This case once again demonstrates how much a headline can influence the perception of an interview, and this isn’t the first time the Neweys have casually commented on articles online.
However, this time, Marko, in his original statement, spoke about how some incidents in the past had affected Red Bull’s view of Tsunoda, but without directly accusing Adrian Newey.
“Looking back, promoting Lawson in 2025 wasn’t the right decision. But in general, it all comes down to a single incident,” Helmut Marko explains – “At Silverstone, Yuki Tsunoda collided with Pierre Gasly, and the debris on the track damaged Max Verstappen’s car floor, causing him to lose the race.” – he pointed out.
He then explains the reaction of Red Bull’s former designer: “Adrian Newey, at the time, was furious. From that point on, Yuki became something of a negative obsession for him. But now Newey is no longer here, and Yuki has worked a lot on himself.”
On the eve of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, Helmut Marko once again proves to be a skilled communicator, able to provoke his rivals in order to divert attention from management mistakes made within Red Bull.
