Helmut Marko reacts to Adrian Newey becoming Aston Martin team principal: “Managing a team isn’t his strength”. Helmut Marko expresses surprise at Adrian Newey’s decision to become Aston Martin team principal.

F1 | Even Marko surprised by Newey’s choice but reveals: “It’s not his strongest skill”

Helmut Marko has commented on Adrian Newey’s decision to become the new Team Principal of Aston Martin starting in 2026. The move by the legendary British designer has shocked many, even one of the most “reserved” figures in the paddock like Helmut Marko. The Red Bull advisor has worked closely with Adrian Newey for years, gaining deep insight into his character and working methods.

Adrian Newey’s choice surprises even Marko

For this reason, Helmut Marko was asked about the decision on the eve of the Qatar Grand Prix weekend. He told Kleine Zeitung:

“The news really surprised me. We will have to see how Adrian performs in practice. Certainly, team management is not his main strength. He is extraordinary at designing cars, defining setups, and optimizing development. But I was pleasantly surprised by his decision to try his hand at a completely new role.”

It will be particularly interesting to see how Newey manages to combine his roles as a designer and as a team manager. This represents a significant new challenge for him, likely providing exactly the kind of change he was looking for in the latter part of his career.

A new challenge for the design genius
After decades of being the technical mastermind behind 12 constructors’ titles and 13 drivers’ championships across Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, Adrian Newey has never previously held the top job on the pit wall.
Marko’s comments highlight the scale of the challenge awaiting the 66-year-old when he officially starts at Aston Martin in March 2026. Combining day-to-day team leadership with hands-on design work represents uncharted territory for a man whose genius has always thrived in the drawing office and wind tunnel rather than in operational meetings and budget discussions.
Yet Marko believes the move could be exactly what Newey needs at this stage of his extraordinary career – a fresh stimulus after conquering every major technical challenge the sport can offer.
Whether Adrian Newey’s legendary attention to detail and aerodynamic brilliance will translate into successful people-management and strategic leadership remains one of the most intriguing questions heading into the new regulation cycle. For now, even those who know him best are left intrigued and impressed in equal measure by his willingness to step so far outside his comfort zone.
