The Austrian Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko, has openly recognized the significant contribution of former Red Bull engineer Rob Marshall in McLaren’s seasonal triumphs, highlighting the impact of his expertise and experience on the British team’s performance.
Significant Changes at Red Bull
Over the course of the 2025 Formula 1 season, despite Max Verstappen defending his World Drivers’ Championship title, Red Bull Racing has experienced a noticeable decline in the level of competitiveness it consistently displayed in previous years. The team has also had to contend with the departure of key figures, most notably the long-serving Team Principal Christian Horner, who was unexpectedly dismissed from his position at the Milton Keynes headquarters.
Beyond management changes, Red Bull has also lost access to two of the most influential engineers in modern Formula 1: Adrian Newey, who is now with Aston Martin, and Rob Marshall, both of whom were instrumental in securing four consecutive Drivers’ Championship titles for Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013, as well as multiple championship victories for Max Verstappen from 2021 to 2024. Specifically, Rob Marshall spent seventeen years with the Anglo-Austrian team, developing innovative solutions and contributing to the team’s strategic and technical excellence, before joining McLaren at the beginning of 2024. At McLaren, he currently holds the position of Technical Director, continuing to apply his extensive knowledge to enhance the team’s competitiveness.
Immediate Impact at McLaren
Marshall’s arrival at McLaren proved to be transformative. He played a crucial role in helping the Woking-based team secure the Constructors’ Championship title in his first year with the team. The current 2025 season has further demonstrated McLaren’s dominance, with the team leading both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships. Drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have propelled the team to victory in eleven out of fourteen races so far, underlining the strength of the squad and the effectiveness of its technical leadership.
Speculation has arisen about how competitive Red Bull might have been had Rob Marshall remained with the Milton Keynes team. While this remains a hypothetical question, Helmut Marko has praised the British engineer without reservation: “McLaren has recognized that he is an excellent engineer, and he certainly plays a crucial role in the team’s success,” Marko explained in an interview with F1 Insider. “It is always positive when key positions are occupied by people with extensive experience, who also bring practical, hands-on knowledge to the team.”
Team Dynamics and Driver Management
Staying on the topic of McLaren, Helmut Marko also commented on the current driver situation at the team, noting that the dominance displayed by Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris means that team orders have not been necessary. At 82 years old, Marko emphasized the sporting nature of McLaren’s approach: “As long as you are this dominant, you can remain at the top without issuing team orders,” he said. “I believe it is very sporting that they have not needed to implement them. If the situation becomes more competitive, having two leading drivers can certainly be a challenge, but given McLaren’s current advantage, this is not an issue. The team is not taking any risks at the moment.”
Marko’s observations underline the broader impact that high-caliber technical staff, such as Rob Marshall, have on Formula 1 teams. Their expertise not only influences car performance and race strategy but also plays a pivotal role in driver confidence, team cohesion, and long-term championship campaigns. McLaren’s recent resurgence can therefore be attributed not only to the talent of its drivers but also to the strategic and technical guidance provided by engineers with a proven track record at the highest level of the sport.
