Helmut Marko praises Kimi Antonelli but issues a warning over title ambitions
The short break in the Formula 1 calendar comes at the right time for everyone in the paddock. For some teams, it represents an opportunity to regroup, spend valuable hours in the simulator, and find solutions to early-season challenges linked to the new regulatory cycle. For others at the front of the grid, however, it is a chance to consolidate their advantage and maintain momentum. Mercedes, for example, will not be easing off and will continue pushing to extend what is already a significant edge, while Kimi Antonelli will be aiming to hold on to his position at the top of the world championship standings — a scenario that would have seemed unlikely just a few weeks ago.
The young driver from Bologna will use the unexpected break, caused by the situation in Iran, to fully process what he has achieved in the opening three Grands Prix. Heading into the Miami Grand Prix, Antonelli is expected to arrive with renewed confidence and the right level of self-belief to challenge and potentially outperform his teammate George Russell once again. Former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has expressed strong admiration for the Italian talent, but he has also issued a clear warning: greater consistency will be essential compared to what was seen during the 2025 season.
Helmut Marko: “Antonelli must prove his consistency against Russell”
“His attitude is truly a breath of fresh air. Kimi was already incredibly fast everywhere in the junior categories, and it is great to see a young driver like him emerging,” Helmut Marko said in an interview with ORF. “The question is whether he will be able to maintain this speed and these performances over the course of the entire season.”
“Russell is certainly the more experienced driver, and in 2025, once the races moved to Europe, Kimi Antonelli experienced a significant drop in performance,” he added. “But within the team, there will be an exciting battle — the world championship will definitely be decided between the two Mercedes drivers.”
Helmut Marko’s observations highlight the fascinating dynamic currently unfolding at Mercedes. By labeling the title fight a private battle between Russell and Antonelli, he is essentially writing off the rest of the grid—including his former team. Kimi Antonelli’s ability to avoid the “European slump” he experienced in his previous season will be the deciding factor in whether he can become one of the youngest champions in the sport’s history.
