Helmut Marko: “In 2026, we aim to be at the front so Max Verstappen’s contract clauses won’t matter”. Helmut Marko discusses Red Bull’s 2026 plans.

Max Verstappen, 2024 F1

The words of the Austrian advisor carry weight in the world of Formula 1. With Christian Horner departing, Max Verstappen remains at Red Bull Racing. The Milton Keynes-based team has parted ways with the team principal who guided the team to an impressive 14 World Championship titles, yet the Dutch driver is confirmed to remain behind the wheel in 2026. That year marks a significant milestone for Red Bull, as the team will compete for the first time with a fully in-house designed power unit.

The engineers led by Pierre Waché are now tasked with proving their capability to design a competitive Formula 1 car without the legendary Adrian Newey. The last year and a half have been challenging, and the new engine division faces an almost miraculous challenge: to avoid falling short against established rivals who possess unmatched experience, tradition, and technical expertise. For newcomers, this is a formidable benchmark.

Despite the hurdles, Helmut Marko remains optimistic about surprising the F1 paddock. One key strategy to ensure Max Verstappen does not consider leaving Red Bull is to maintain strong performance and make the exit clauses of his contract irrelevant. “We are counting on being back at the front with Max next season, so there will no longer be any discussion about his contractual clauses,” Marko told Krone. He added that the current performance indicators are promising and emphasized that there is still significant time before the first pre-season tests.

Marko further elaborated on the technical progress: “We are well advanced with the chassis, and the success of the power unit will depend on four critical components: the internal combustion engine, the battery, the fuel, and the overall energy supply system. I hope we do not face a repeat of 2014, when Mercedes had an advantage of 50 to 70 horsepower.”

The Red Bull advisor also highlighted the morale of Verstappen: “Max sees that we are working extremely hard. To make him smile, we just need to talk about GT3 and Sim-Racing.” The freedom for Max Verstappen to participate in GT3 racing and sim-racing is a unique benefit provided by Red Bull, an opportunity that would likely be limited in another Formula 1 team. This added flexibility underscores the team’s commitment to keeping their star driver engaged both on and off the track.

Red Bull’s ambition for 2026 is clear: a strong start to the season with Max Verstappen leading the charge, coupled with a power unit capable of challenging the established giants. Helmut Marko’s statements reflect the team’s determination to innovate, compete at the highest level, and secure the loyalty of one of the sport’s most talented drivers for years to come.
