Since 2021, Max Verstappen has turned the enormous expectations surrounding him into reality, collecting four consecutive world titles that undoubtedly place him among the greatest in Formula 1 history. For the Dutch champion, 2024 seemed to start on an easy note with 7 victories in the first 10 GPs, but the second half of the championship was anything but smooth, with the remaining 2 wins in the last 14 races—in Brazil and Qatar—being triumphs of the driver more than the car.
Helmut Marko assessed his protégé’s season in *Speedweek*: “Max has matured even further this year. He was the best mentally and in duels, and he has learned to do only what is necessary. In Brazil, he showed on a wet track what he is capable of, and it was a masterstroke because a world title was at stake, and he had great pressure on his shoulders. This time—unlike in 2016—he made no mistakes, proving his mental solidity.”
A jab at the media
Helmut Marko then turned his attention—sharply—to the media: “We don’t care about journalists’ evaluations or Max’s popularity. The world championship is decided based on points, and these clearly speak in favor of Max. It’s true that, especially in the British media, there isn’t necessarily objective balance. However, I believe there is also a phenomenon where someone entering the scene as a new prospect or potential champion receives more sympathy than an established champion. But Max doesn’t care; he always says what he thinks and shows his emotions, and I believe that’s the right way to be.”
