Oscar Piastri is not leaving Woking, according to Zak Brown. The McLaren CEO, embroiled for months in an all-out war with Red Bull, did not hold back from commenting on Helmut Marko’s recent claims that Mark Webber, the young Australian driver’s manager, was “seeking intense dialogue.”
This speculation was immediately dismissed by Oscar Piastri himself, who reaffirmed his loyalty to McLaren on the eve of the Mexican weekend, also throwing a jab at the Austrian.
He stated that he is very happy where he is, has a contract for the next two years, and has no intention of going elsewhere. He added that it wouldn’t be a Formula 1 week without some comments from Helmut Marko. “We all know that Helmut says a lot of things to the press. As far as I know, there’s nothing true about it. I am very, very happy where I am.”
“The team has been incredibly supportive since I arrived in F1; they gave me an opportunity. Currently, we are in a very happy position in the standings, so I am more than pleased with where I am right now.” – he pointed out.
Oscar further added that he was not particularly surprised by the comments. He considered it a nice compliment but reiterated that he is very happy where he is. He also mentioned that Red Bull has quite a few drivers to choose from if they wish.
No farewell in sight
Commenting on the performance of Pato O’Ward in the first free practice session, Zak Brown seized the opportunity to respond to the rival without beating around the bush: “I definitely think (Pato) is capable of becoming a Formula 1 driver. But we are obviously very satisfied with our two drivers, and we have them under contract for quite some time. They are not going anywhere, contrary to the speculation of another team boss.” – the McLaren chief executive officer concluded.
