Red Bull’s trophy cabinet boasts six Constructors’ titles in addition to eight Drivers’ Championships. Interestingly, only two Red Bull talents have entered the Formula 1 hall of fame with four consecutive season titles: Sebastian Vettel, from 2010 to 2013, and more recently Max Verstappen, from 2021 to 2024. Celebrating these achievements within the team was Helmut Marko, the now former Red Bull Advisor.
Marko, the creator of the Red Bull Junior Team, played a crucial role in shaping the careers of both drivers. According to the 82-year-old, interviewed by the German newspaper Merkur, Sebastian Vettel had characteristics markedly different from those observed in Max Verstappen: “Sebastian approached everything in a more analytical way and spent hours upon hours with the engineers to extract every last bit of performance from the car,” he explained. “Max initially relied more on his natural instinct, but since then he has become a driver who knows exactly what he wants and also knows how to lead a team.”
Marko emphasized that, as he has on other occasions, he greatly admires Max Verstappen’s qualities, not focusing solely on his sporting skills: “Verstappen is special. Super fast, incredibly talented, and extremely focused,” he added. “I have never had such a close connection with another driver. He has unwavering values that I would attribute only to people of good character. This combination is extremely rare.”
In summary, Helmut Marko’s comparison sheds light on the evolving philosophy of Red Bull’s greatest champions, contrasting Sebastian Vettel’s methodical, engineering-focused work ethic with Max Verstappen’s transition from raw, instinctive speed to becoming a mature team leader. While their technical approaches differed, Marko emphasizes that Max Verstappen’s unique blend of elite talent and strong personal character is what truly sets him apart as a once-in-a-generation driver in the history of the sport.
