Helmut Marko launches scathing attack on Red Bull: Resignation theory collapses
On December 9, the Formula 1 world was hit with a major shock: Helmut Marko and Red Bull parted ways after more than two decades together. The Austrian has been one of the key architects behind the Milton Keynes team’s many successes, notably discovering two generational talents in Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. However, his tenure also included controversial moments, such as his outspoken comments – the latest being criticism of Kimi Antonelli after the Qatar Grand Prix. There were also questions about his potential role in the dismissal of Christian Horner, perhaps with ambitions for greater influence within the organization.
In the days before and after Red Bull’s official statement, numerous rumors circulated – some suggesting it was the 82-year-old’s voluntary resignation, others pointing to a forced exit following recent internal events. The former senior advisor had remained silent throughout the week, only thanking his team for the years of collaboration. But now Helmut Marko has chosen to speak out, delivering harsh words aimed directly at Red Bull.
“I didn’t even read that nonsensical press release”
Helmut Marko has never held back when speaking to the media, and this time was no different – he pulled no punches in describing what really happened. In an interview with De Limburger, the Austrian opened up: “I don’t want to go into details, but I didn’t even read that nonsensical press release,” thundered the former advisor. He went further with even stronger criticism: “You think you know people well, but then you discover that’s not the case…”.
The situation would not have changed even if Max Verstappen had secured his fifth world title, as Helmut Marko himself admitted. This points to a decision that had already been made some time ago by Red Bull’s leadership, following incidents where Marko made choices against the wishes of management and the majority of the Austrian team. Therefore, Helmut Marko did not resign voluntarily – he was effectively pushed out of the very team he helped elevate to the pinnacle of Formula 1.
