Monaco has always been one of the most difficult circuits on the Formula 1 calendar for overtaking, making comeback drives particularly rare. Yet Esteban Ocon managed exactly that, climbing from 17th on the grid to finish in the points after a determined and well-executed race.
While retirements, penalties and strategic opportunities all played a role, the Frenchman and Haas were able to take full advantage of the circumstances to secure a valuable ninth-place finish in the Monaco Grand Prix.
Monaco remains a unique challenge
The history of the Monaco Grand Prix has repeatedly shown how difficult it is to make progress through the field on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo. Overtaking opportunities are scarce, meaning that strategy, timing and race management often become more important than outright pace.
Those factors worked in Esteban Ocon’s favour during a challenging period of his season. Starting only 17th on the grid, the Haas driver immediately gained two positions thanks to Gabriel Bortoleto’s pit-lane start and the issue Max Verstappen experienced at the start.
Esteban Ocon then became one of the first drivers to make a pit stop, a strategy that gradually helped him move up the order as the race unfolded. Additional retirements and penalties promoted him to 11th place before the red flag. Following the restart, further penalties handed to George Russell and Nico Hülkenberg elevated the Frenchman two more positions, allowing him to finish ninth and secure his best result of the season.
“We did everything right, we made the right decisions and the strategy was excellent,” Esteban Ocon said after the race. “We also managed to avoid problems at the final corner, which was quite tricky. It was tough, but I did it for this team. After 20 laps I thought I wasn’t going to make it to the finish, but then we crossed the line in ninth position. It’s a thoroughly deserved result and I’m extremely happy. It shows that you should never give up. On a track where overtaking is very difficult, you never know what can happen.”
A difficult Monaco weekend for Oliver Bearman
While Esteban Ocon celebrated a return to the points, the Monaco weekend proved far more complicated for his Haas teammate Oliver Bearman.
The British driver had already endured a difficult start to the weekend after crashing into the barriers during the third free practice session. Haas mechanics performed an impressive repair job to get the car ready in time for qualifying, but the challenges continued during the race.
After the start, Oliver Bearman was forced to pit immediately to replace his front wing before eventually retiring from the Grand Prix.
“It was a difficult weekend overall, even though the car showed very good pace in qualifying,” Oliver Bearman explained – “After a qualifying session like the one we had on Saturday, it’s difficult to achieve much around here, and that proved to be the case. It was a horrible day. I picked up damage and had to pit on the opening lap, so it would have taken a miracle to recover from there, and that miracle didn’t happen. But I’m happy about the points Esteban scored for the team.”
Important points for Haas
Although Monaco delivered mixed fortunes for Haas, the team leaves the Principality with valuable championship points thanks to Esteban Ocon’s persistence and a strategy that maximized every opportunity available.
In a race where track position is everything and overtaking is notoriously difficult, moving from 17th on the grid to ninth at the finish represented one of the standout recovery drives of the weekend. For Esteban Ocon, the result provides a much-needed boost after several difficult races, while also demonstrating that patience, smart strategy and resilience can still produce strong results even on Formula 1’s most unforgiving street circuit.
