The Haas team has embarked on an interesting growth path in the 2024 Formula 1 season. After finishing at the bottom of the standings in two of the three championships between 2021 and 2023, this year the American team, led by new team principal Ayao Komatsu, who has replaced Guenther Steiner, seems to have regained momentum. The progress is visible not only on the track but also in strategic moves, such as the new partnership signed with Toyota, strongly desired by Ayao Komatsu. This alliance could mark a turning point for Gene Haas’s team, leading it into a new phase of development.
As reported by the Italian media and reiterated by Toyota executives during the official announcement, the Japanese automaker currently has no plans to enter Formula 1 with its own team or a dedicated power unit, partly due to the disappointing results obtained in the early 2000s. However, the situation could change in the future, opening up new possibilities. The Toyota Gazoo Racing headquarters in Cologne could become the nerve center of Haas’s technical operations if the collaboration proves successful. Although this is a future scenario, it is not hard to imagine that an increasing involvement of Toyota in Formula 1 would be welcomed. A gradual shift of technical activities from Maranello to Cologne could represent just the first step toward a deeper partnership.
The current agreement between Haas and Ferrari for the supply of power units has been extended until 2028, with an option for renewal until 2030, giving the team enough time to carefully assess future moves. It is not unrealistic to think that, within five or six seasons, we could see a full Haas-Toyota team, with headquarters in Germany and a Toyota-branded power unit, developed internally or in collaboration. What is certain is that Ayao Komatsu’s strategic vision is ambitious and aims to ensure constant and sustainable growth in the long term.
