Aston Martin entered the season with ambitious expectations. The arrival of Adrian Newey, the substantial investments made by Lawrence Stroll, and the technical support of Honda appeared to provide all the ingredients necessary for the Silverstone-based team to establish itself among Formula 1’s leading contenders.
With two-time world champion Fernando Alonso fully motivated and eager to return to the front of the grid, many expected Aston Martin to take a significant step forward. Instead, the opening Grands Prix of the season have painted a very different picture.
Aston Martin-Honda proving a disappointment
Rather than emerging as a frontrunner, Aston Martin has become one of the biggest disappointments of the campaign so far. The team’s performances have fallen well short of expectations, while Honda’s power unit has also struggled to impress.
After the first rounds of the championship, Aston Martin has managed to score just a single point, leaving the team far from the position many predicted during the winter.
Steiner’s Formula 2 relegation joke
The situation has not gone unnoticed in the paddock, including by former Haas team principal Günther Steiner, who now heads the Tech3 MotoGP team.
Speaking on the Red Flags podcast, the Italian manager delivered a particularly sharp assessment of Aston Martin, Honda and the lack of a relegation system in Formula 1.
“It’s not like Lawrence Stroll isn’t trying,” Steiner said. “Very few people have invested as much of their own money in Formula 1 as Lawrence has. I think Honda needs something more than just the ADUO. He’ll take a big share of the funding because they are doing very badly, you know. He will certainly help them, because if they stay where they are, they’ll have to be relegated to Formula 2. I don’t think Lawrence Stroll is proud of what’s happening, but the responsibility is his. It’s his team.
“Stefano Domenicali doesn’t have the authority to decide when they should race, when they shouldn’t, what they should do or how they should behave. Unfortunately for Formula 1, there is no relegation rule. In most other sports, if you don’t perform, guess what? You get relegated.”
“Simply unacceptable”
Steiner did not stop there. The former Haas boss also compared Aston Martin’s performances with those of Cadillac, arguing that the British team has looked worse than a newcomer that is still finding its feet in Formula 1.
“Aston Martin makes even Cadillac look good,” Steiner added. “And Cadillac finished the race three laps down – “What Aston Martin is doing right now is, in my opinion, simply unacceptable. It no longer meets Formula 1 standards. You’re last, but miles behind, and on top of that you don’t even finish the race.”
Steiner’s comments reflect the growing scrutiny surrounding Aston Martin’s difficult start to the season. With major investments already made and expectations running high, the pressure is mounting on the Silverstone outfit to turn its fortunes around and begin delivering results that match its ambitions.
