The bidding war for Gianpiero Lambiase has officially begun in Formula 1. Max Verstappen’s race engineer at Red Bull is being pursued by at least two teams. The British engineer with an Italian passport has become a true superstar on the grid. His work alongside the four-time world champion from the Netherlands has earned him enormous respect within the paddock and widespread admiration among his peers. Today, it is not only Adrian Newey who would like him in the team, but also James Vowles.
The winter market for technical staff is heating up once again. After partial confirmations at the end of the season, which suggested he would remain in Milton Keynes, Gianpiero Lambiase now appears ready to move on. This has been reported by Franco Nugnes on motorsport.com, revealing negotiations that had so far remained under the radar. While it is true that Max Verstappen’s engineer has been approached by Aston Martin, another team has reportedly put a very attractive offer on the table.
The British engineer is understood to be seeking a management-level role, one that would keep him further away from the track. This desire is linked to serious personal issues that already prevented him from working trackside with his driver at several Grands Prix during the 2025 season. The Silverstone-based team is believed to have offered him the position of CEO or team principal, a role currently occupied on a temporary basis by Adrian Newey. However, the option that could take him to Grove remains very much alive.
Lambiase: Aston Martin or Williams?
If his former Red Bull colleague Adrian Newey would be more than happy to welcome him back into the team and focus more closely on technical matters, James Vowles is reportedly pushing hard to bring Gianpiero Lambiase to Williams. The Grove project, featuring Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz behind the wheel and powered by Mercedes engines, is ambitious and aims to return the historic British team to the front of the grid.
Another interesting element is the potential role Max Verstappen himself could play. A possible move of the British engineer to Silverstone could create the right conditions to also attract the Hasselt-born champion to Lawrence Stroll’s team in the future, adding yet another layer of intrigue to an already complex and fascinating Formula 1 transfer market.
