McLaren vs. Red Bull: A battle at the top, both on and off the track
The first Grand Prix of the year highlighted McLaren’s strength and Max Verstappen’s competitiveness, even in technically inferior conditions on a wet track. The Melbourne race, where Lando Norris triumphed over the reigning world champion, also provided an opportunity for team bosses to clash both on the circuit and in front of the media.
When two teams fight at the top, every chance to unsettle rivals is seized, and the battle extends beyond the track to the statements made in the paddock. McLaren CEO Zak Brown has made it clear that Red Bull team principal Chris Horner is not someone he gets along with, adding that the comments seen in the latest *Drive to Survive* accurately reflect reality without any forced narrative.
Zak Brown’s words
“This feud is real. We don’t like each other: I don’t like how he behaves, and without a doubt, he thinks the same about me,” the American told *The Telegraph*. “However, I think it’s good for the sport. We need different personalities and these rivalries. Some are friendly and sporting, others are fiercer, but that’s always been the case.” – Zak Brown explained.
The rivalry began with Red Bull’s 2021 budget cap breach, sparking an ongoing war of words between the two. Now that McLaren has become a top contender, Horner has hit back, questioning how the team manages to heat up its tires effectively while also minimizing wear. The ongoing debate over McLaren’s so-called “mini-DRS” system has only added fuel to the fire.
