Karun Chandhok has issued a warning to George Russell: even winning the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship may not secure his future with Mercedes. The former F1 driver advises the British racer to take control of his own destiny, separating his management from the team and carefully evaluating opportunities in the 2027 driver market. With Toto Wolff having openly shown interest in Max Verstappen, uncertainties remain, and Russell will need to act smartly to maintain his prominence in the sport.
Russell and Antonelli contract renewals for 2026
Ahead of the 2025 United States Grand Prix, Mercedes confirmed the contract extensions for George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Although Wolff reiterated he had no intention of replacing his drivers, some uncertainty lingered due to Mercedes’ interest in Verstappen. Wolff had briefly “flirted” with signing the four-time world champion, later admitting he regretted it.
This led to prolonged contract negotiations, especially with George Russell, who sought assurances for a deal beyond 2026 and a reduction in mandatory media duties. The British driver remains optimistic amid paddock rumors that Mercedes could return to competitiveness next year with the new regulations.
Chandhok’s advice to Russell
Speaking on Ted Kravitz’s Podbook in Austin, Karun Chandhok advised Russell to take control of his own contract. Currently, Wolff and Mercedes manage Russell, thanks to his long-standing collaboration with their junior program since 2017.
Karun Chandhok stated, “Why not? Frank Williams did it four times, losing four world champions. For me, this experience should be an orange light, at least for George, signaling that it’s time to separate his management from the team he races for. He has been a passenger in this process for too long. Toto has negotiated on both sides for this agreement. For 2027, if Max is a contender, and he absolutely is for that seat, then George will need to spend next year taking control of his own destiny. He must manage his contract process, his decision-making, and understand the rest of the market. While Mercedes manages him, why would they act in his best interest? He needs to consider: is there a chance to move to Aston Martin in 2027? Ferrari? How will the Honda engine develop? Maybe that’s the right seat, or Audi, or Red Bull-Ford.”
Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond
The 2026 season will be crucial for many drivers, including George Russell. Reports suggest George Russell has included a clause in his contract allowing him to leave Mercedes if the team does not prove competitive. Meanwhile, the possibility of signing Max Verstappen looms, and it is hard to imagine Wolff passing up the opportunity. The question remains: will Russell stay at Mercedes alongside Verstappen, with whom he has clashed multiple times both on and off track over recent seasons?
