George Russell’s Hungarian Grand Prix was compromised before the race had even begun when an engine anomaly triggered the anti-stall system in his Mercedes. The British driver dropped from sixth on the grid to the back of the field, adding another painful setback to a difficult first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Recovering through the field at the tight and technical Hungaroring was never going to be easy, but George Russell limited the damage by finishing seventh, directly behind Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull. The result, reflected in the complete 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix classification, left the Mercedes driver reflecting on the repeated problems that have undermined his pursuit of championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
George Russell explains Mercedes anti-stall problem in Hungary
George Russell’s troubles began during the final seconds before the lights went out. An unexpected change in the power unit’s response caused the anti-stall system to activate and sent him tumbling down the order. Mercedes subsequently provided further details about the engine fault behind George Russell’s disastrous start.
“I was on the throttle holding the revs and suddenly, about four seconds before the lights went out, the engine started revving up and down,” George Russell explained. “I was reacting with the throttle pedal, but it made no difference. The engine simply wasn’t responding to my inputs.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also confirmed the malfunction and praised George Russell’s recovery drive, although he made no attempt to hide his frustration with the recurring problems affecting car number 63.
“It looks like yet another issue for George,” Toto Wolff said. “Apparently, he applied around 10% throttle and the engine went to full throttle. Then he lifted off and the car bogged down. Honestly, I’m not happy with the number of mistakes that are happening. That was the cause, but after that he drove brilliantly, came through the traffic with ease and recovered the maximum number of points possible.”
An ‘unbelievable’ list of setbacks for George Russell
The Budapest failure followed a series of technical problems and unfavourable incidents during the opening half of the championship. George Russell had already faced a top-speed deficit at Silverstone, a power unit failure while leading in Canada and deployment problems in Belgium. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli extended his championship advantage by recovering from seventh on the grid to finish third in Hungary.
“If I were to keep being disappointed by everything that happens, I would be disappointed every single day of the week,” George Russell admitted. “You have to try to stay positive. Obviously, it was yet another technical problem that completely ruined the race, but I can find some positives. The pace was very strong and the team told me it was on the level of the best, which hasn’t been the case for me for two or three races. I’ll take that positive, even though the list of things that have happened this season is truly unbelievable.”
George Russell targets a reset during the F1 summer break
George Russell will enter the summer shutdown third in the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ standings. He hopes the break will allow him to put the setbacks behind him and return with greater consistency for the second half of the campaign.
“It has not been a smooth first half of the season at all,” George Russell concluded. “I’m looking forward to this break so I can reset and come back stronger after the summer shutdown. It has been something of a rollercoaster on my side so far, and I really hope the second half of the year can be much better.”
