George Russell unexpectedly finished second at the 2026 British Grand Prix after a dramatic and unpredictable race at Silverstone. Although the Mercedes driver lacked the pace to challenge teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the two Ferrari SF-26 cars of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, a series of incidents throughout the race allowed the British driver to finish between the two Ferrari drivers and significantly reduce the gap to Antonelli in the championship standings.
Speaking after the race, George Russell admitted that fortune had played a major role in his result.
“I was really lucky today, but I’m happy to have secured my first podium in front of my home crowd. I would have preferred to win, but we had several issues with the car. The pace wasn’t where I wanted it to be, and the tyres felt as hard as stone at the start of the race,” he said.

George Russell also revealed that Mercedes experienced performance issues throughout the weekend, affecting both qualifying and race pace.
“I don’t know. We had problems on the straights during qualifying, and something similar happened in the race. We have some very strong rivals, and we need to work even harder if we want to stay ahead,” George Russell concluded.
