Andrea Kimi Antonelli looked to be in the perfect position to challenge Charles Leclerc for victory at the 2026 British Grand Prix. Running on fresher hard tyres, the Mercedes driver had outstanding pace and appeared to have everything he needed to launch an attack on the Ferrari and claim what would have been his sixth Formula 1 victory of the season.
Instead, his race took a dramatic turn on lap 41 of the 52-lap Silverstone event. After riding the kerb at Turn 9, Copse, Antonelli’s Mercedes W17 suffered a technical problem that completely changed the outcome of his afternoon.
From potential race winner to finishing outside the points, the Italian’s hopes disappeared in an instant. Mercedes informed him that the issue involved the wheel shield on the front-left wheel—an internal aerodynamic cover designed to manage airflow around the wheel assembly. Antonelli returned to the pits in the hope that the first stop would solve the problem, but the issue remained.
The Mercedes driver was forced to pit for a second time. Once the team identified the damaged component as the source of the problem, they removed it and sent Antonelli back onto the track. Although the car became more manageable, he was still only hoping to salvage a handful of points.
“It looks like the problem was the wheel shield. It failed instantly. I took the kerbs exactly the same way on every lap. I came out of Copse and immediately felt that something had broken.”
Antonelli: “I think something else may have broken as well”
The Mercedes driver believes the wheel shield may not have been the only component damaged during the incident.
“The car simply wouldn’t turn anymore. And when it did, the wheel was practically lifted off the ground. It was in the air. I immediately thought something had broken. Now we know what it was, but we still don’t know whether anything else was damaged because, honestly, I think there may have been more than just the wheel shield. The team hasn’t had the chance to fully analyse the car yet. It’s a real shame because today I had the opportunity to win, and I definitely would have gone for it.”
Despite fighting back toward the points, Antonelli’s race became even more complicated when he received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits multiple times. Those excursions largely resulted from the front-left damage, which made the Mercedes extremely difficult to control. The late Safety Car then erased any remaining chance of recovering positions, dropping him to 16th at the finish.
“The biggest disappointment is that we had to make two pit stops. During the first one we changed the front wing, but the problem was still there. At the second stop they removed the damaged part, and the car became drivable—more or less. It’s a shame because even with the damage we probably could have finished sixth or seventh, and maybe we could have avoided the penalty. But it’s difficult to say.”
Antonelli remains optimistic despite losing valuable points
The Italian admitted he was both disappointed and frustrated, but he took confidence from the pace he displayed throughout the race.
“I’m disappointed and angry. But the important thing is that today I was really quick and had a great opportunity to win. On the hard tyres I was catching Charles Leclerc and my pace was extremely strong. It’s a shame that I never even had the chance to try.”
Antonelli also explained why he continued pushing despite the damage, even though it eventually led to the track limits penalty.
“Whenever I get in the car, I give absolutely everything. Even today, when everything seemed to be going against us, I stayed out because I wanted to score at least a few points. I was close to doing that, but then the Safety Car came out and I no longer had the opportunity. Those are the rules regarding track limits—I can’t do anything about that. Obviously I was trying to give my maximum just to keep the car on the track, but it was almost impossible to drive. At that point I picked up the penalty, but there was nothing else I could do.”
Antonelli’s championship lead has narrowed once again following the Silverstone setback. The Mercedes driver now leaves Britain with 179 points, while teammate George Russell has closed the gap to 154. Nevertheless, Antonelli remains confident after once again demonstrating that he had arguably the fastest race pace of the entire field.
“We’ve certainly lost more points, but I don’t think this is a bad period for me. Throughout the entire weekend I showed that I had the speed. We also showed the potential of our package. As a team we’re in a good place, the car is quick, and we’ve demonstrated what we’re capable of.”
