Carlos Sainz has responded to Fernando Alonso’s comments about the standard of drivers in Formula 1, arguing that competing near the back of the grid does not necessarily reflect a lack of talent. Speaking ahead of the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, the Williams driver stressed that the competitiveness of the car remains a decisive factor in determining results, suggesting that many drivers currently struggling further down the order could fight for pole positions and victories with the right machinery.
Both Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso know what it means to win in Formula 1, but the two Spaniards now find themselves fighting towards the back of the field. For the Williams driver, their current situations demonstrate how competitive the championship has become and why finishing positions alone cannot provide a complete assessment of a driver’s ability.
Carlos Sainz responds to Fernando Alonso on F1 driver talent
Carlos Sainz believes that drivers competing in the lower positions should not automatically be considered less talented than those regularly fighting at the front. His response to Fernando Alonso centres on the importance of having a competitive car, without which even experienced Grand Prix winners can struggle to achieve strong results.
“Fernando and I know what it means to win, but today we find ourselves fighting near the back. That shows just how competitive Formula 1 is. I don’t think those starting at the back are less talented: many drivers, with a winning car, could take pole positions and victories,” Carlos Sainz explained.
The Spaniard’s assessment highlights the distinction between a driver’s individual abilities and the results that their machinery allows them to achieve. His argument is that the competitive order does not necessarily represent a ranking of the talent available across the Formula 1 grid.
Why Carlos Sainz believes racing at the back changes a driver’s approach
Beyond the importance of car performance, Carlos Sainz also explained how competing further down the field can influence a driver’s decisions during a race. With fewer opportunities to fight for significant results, drivers may be more inclined to take risks in an attempt to gain positions.
“When you’re in the lower positions, though, you tend to take more risks because there’s little to lose. Even after a great start, you can still find yourself a long way back. It’s a situation I’m not happy with and one I want to get out of as soon as possible,” the Williams driver added.
His remarks underline the frustration of competing in a car that does not consistently offer the opportunity to challenge near the front. Even a strong start may not be sufficient to change the outcome substantially, leaving drivers searching for opportunities to improve their race position.
For Carlos Sainz, the objective is to escape that situation as quickly as possible. His response to Fernando Alonso makes clear that he does not regard his current position with Williams as a reflection of his ability to compete for victories, but rather as a consequence of the machinery available to him.
The Spaniard has previously discussed the importance of adapting to different Formula 1 cars, including how car characteristics and driving styles can influence a driver’s performance. His latest comments reinforce his view that the relationship between the driver and the car is central to understanding results.
As the championship arrives in Mexico, Carlos Sainz remains determined to improve his competitive position with Williams. Although he acknowledges the difficulties of racing towards the back, he maintains that drivers in those positions should not be judged solely by their results, particularly when the difference in car performance can determine who has a realistic opportunity to win.
