Growth and experience behind the win

Russell acknowledged how much he has evolved compared to the early days of his career, stating: “I think [this victory] comes down to experience and knowing how to make the most of every situation. Probably a couple of years ago I drove a bit more tense and overreacted in circumstances where I shouldn’t have. Now I feel much more relaxed.”

Lessons learned from Singapore

Indeed, two years ago at this very circuit, George Russell made a mistake that cost him the entire race. He was running third behind Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris — in the iconic race where Sainz intentionally allowed Norris to use DRS to stay ahead — and on the final lap he clipped the wall, stalling the car in turn 10.

Reflecting on last weekend’s Grand Prix, George Russell continued: “At the start of the day, I felt relaxed. When it started raining an hour before the race, I thought, ‘It’s the same for everyone, nothing I can do, so no reason to stress.’ A few years ago I would have reacted very differently.”

Confidence and career milestones

At Singapore, George Russell secured his fifth career victory. With a consistently competitive Mercedes, many more wins could follow. Over the years, George has repeatedly shown his talent, although the car hasn’t always supported him.

“This track hasn’t been my best friend over the years, and often it was my own fault. But today I am a very different driver than I was a couple of years ago. I feel more complete, more confident. I know exactly what I need to do in certain situations,” he said.

“Of course, I was nervous before the race, but I didn’t feel additional stress or pressure. It felt like just another race, and I knew I had a chance to win. I felt comfortable. I’ve been saying it for a while: I feel ready to fight for the championship. I feel ready to take the next step.”

Consistency despite challenges

This season has been a major test of consistency for George. Despite fewer results due to the car’s instability, he has consistently given his maximum effort and has set a great example for his rookie teammate, proving his growth as a leader and competitor within the Mercedes team.
