George Russell continues to address questions about his ongoing contract negotiations with Mercedes, but now that the possibility of Max Verstappen joining the Silver Arrows has effectively disappeared, the renewal seems only a matter of time.
The contractual situation involving George Russell, fellow Mercedes junior driver Kimi Antonelli, and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team has been one of the most discussed topics in recent weeks. Adding fuel to the speculation were rumors that Mercedes’s delay in renewing Russell’s contract was due to the Brackley-based team’s interest in signing Max Verstappen.
According to some insider reports, the reigning World Champion Max Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull Racing included a clause allowing him to leave the team if he was not ranked within the top three drivers in the championship standings by the summer break. For this reason, both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli found themselves in a sort of contractual limbo leading up to the Belgian Grand Prix, while Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff continued his discussions with the four-time World Champion Verstappen.
Now that the summer break has arrived and it is clear that Verstappen will not be overtaken in the championship standings, this contractual clause is no longer applicable. The chances of the Dutch driver moving to Mercedes are effectively zero.
At this point, it is only a matter of time before Mercedes formally renews the contracts of their two current drivers, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
George Russell’s Comments on the Contract Situation
“Wolff has nothing to worry about. I have nothing to worry about,” Russell told the media confidently. “Nothing will happen over the summer because, honestly, I just want to rest, recharge, and come back stronger for the second half of the season. But there’s no time pressure from either side. It will happen when it needs to happen. It’s a matter of when, not if.”
“I’m 27 years old and I’ve been with the team for four years. Next year will be my fifth. We want to build this relationship together, but it has to be the right one, and I don’t want to rush things.”
“I waited 12 months already. I’m not going to do things hastily in two weeks. So we’ll sit down at the table when the time is right.”
