George Russell finally has a reason to celebrate after ending a lengthy wait for victory at the Austrian Grand Prix. Following an impressive pole position on Saturday, the Mercedes driver produced another flawless performance on Sunday, controlling the race from start to finish and reminding both himself and his rivals that he still has what it takes to fight at the front.
The victory also allowed Russell to cut ten points from Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead, and after the race he made it clear that he still believes he has everything needed to challenge his Mercedes team-mate over the remainder of the season.
George Russell returns to winning ways
Austria marked a turning point for George Russell after several frustrating months. Throughout the weekend he combined speed with consistency, avoiding mistakes and executing one of his cleanest performances of the year.
Despite controlling much of the race, Russell admitted afterwards that he never had the luxury of relaxing, highlighting the impressive pace shown by both Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen, who remained genuine threats throughout the Grand Prix.
“Kimi wasn’t very lucky because every time he came into the pits, the Virtual Safety Car was deployed on the following lap,” Russell told Sky Sport after the race, referring to the bad luck that has often worked against him at various points this season. “But that’s motorsport. The first part of my race went smoothly, although I was really impressed by Verstappen’s pace. If we look at the gap to McLaren and Ferrari, we can say we did an excellent race, but then you look at Max Verstappen‘s pace and think, ‘Wow, that was tough!’ Max put me under a lot of pressure and forced me to pit with 28 laps remaining. It was a real battle.”
“Races like this remind me that I can do it”
Looking back on the difficult period he has experienced in recent months, Russell admitted that returning to the top step of the podium meant far more than simply collecting another victory.
“It feels fantastic. It’s been quite a while since I last sprayed the champagne,” he said after the race. “I’m proud of the resilience I’ve shown and of the people around me who helped me through those difficult moments, because it’s tough when it feels like everything is going against you and your performances aren’t as good as you’d like. I delivered a great performance in Barcelona, but the race itself turned out to be rather unlucky. Here, I finally feel like myself again, although that doesn’t mean I fully understand this car and these tyres yet.”
Russell also acknowledged the mental challenge of adapting to Formula 1’s new generation of cars while remaining competitive.
“Difficult races definitely test you psychologically, and these last two weekends have been vital in reminding me that I can do it,” Russell continued after reducing the championship gap to Antonelli to 40 points. “Both my one-lap pace and my race pace were very good this weekend, especially at a circuit that doesn’t really suit my driving style. So I’m really looking forward to Silverstone next weekend and racing in front of my home fans. I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic.”
Russell also received public backing from Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who confirmed after the race that he had spent time supporting his driver through the difficult period.
“If one of my drivers needs support, I speak to them and try to help,” Wolff said. “I spoke with George over the last few days, and I’m pleased to see that he delivered such a strong performance.”
