Renewal on the way?
George Russell won the fourth race of his career in Canada, giving Mercedes their first victory of 2025 on a perfect Sunday for the Brackley team, which also celebrated the first podium of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who, like George Russell, was raised by Mercedes in their young driver program.
Russell’s contract expires in 2025, and after the win in Montreal, it is reasonable to expect Toto Wolff will not delay securing the 1998-born driver, who inherited the leadership role at Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton’s move to Scuderia Ferrari.
In Canada, Aston Martin’s interest in George Russell emerged, but in a press conference, he emphasized his loyalty to Mercedes and stated he had not negotiated with other teams because his priority is to stay with Mercedes: “I’m not talking to anyone else or any of the teams that have shown interest. I’ve been clear that my intention is to stay with Mercedes. That has always been clear. And I’m loyal to Mercedes. They gave me the chance to enter Formula 1. I bear no grudges regarding any of the rumors, especially those about Max. Because, as I’ve said many times, why wouldn’t teams be interested in Max? If no driver had a contract for next year, all teams would want Max, and that’s absolutely understandable. Anyway, there are only two seats per team, and I knew that if I delivered the results I have so far, my place wouldn’t be at risk. I’m comfortable and not in a hurry to negotiate the new contract. We want to win together. Why then change a duo that works, like me and Kimi, both raised by Mercedes?” – the British driver concluded at the end of the Canadian Grand Prix, which was held at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal last Sunday.
