According to recent Brazilian sources, Gabriel Bortoleto is close to breaking ties with McLaren and joining Audi’s project under the leadership of Mattia Binotto. The news, reported by the Brazilian outlet “Grande Premio,” suggests that the São Paulo native, reigning F3 champion and current F2 leader, is close to leaving McLaren to join the Audi project headed by Mattia Binotto.
Although there are only two months left until 2025, the former Ferrari team principal has repeatedly stated he is in no rush to decide on Nico Hulkenberg’s teammate for the coming season, with a final decision expected around mid-November.
Recently, there has been speculation about the Swiss team’s interest in Franco Colapinto, who has also caught the attention of Red Bull. Red Bull is reportedly looking to acquire him from Williams (with a significant compensation) with the idea of pairing him with Max Verstappen in 2025.
Another option, though less likely, is a one-year renewal for Valtteri Bottas, even though his results this season haven’t been in his favor.
Debut in 2025 or 2026?
Despite positive talks between McLaren, Audi, and Gabriel Bortoleto’s management team (led by Fernando Alonso’s agency), one issue remains unresolved: the exact year of Gabriel Bortoleto’s official Formula 1 debut. According to the same source, the Brazilian has a guaranteed seat in 2026, but his presence at the start of next season remains uncertain, though discussions are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, speaking ahead of the Interlagos weekend, had encouraging words for the young driver: “I would have already signed him, especially with an eye on 2026, with the young drivers and major regulatory changes coming up. It’s always good to get used to the team for a year, make some mistakes, integrate, and get a feel for the car. When you reach 2026, you feel much more prepared and comfortable.” – the three-time Formula 1 world champion concluded.
