The São Paulo Grand Prix turned into a nightmare weekend for Gabriel Bortoleto, who retired twice in front of his home crowd. His comeback hopes in the main race vanished on the opening lap following a collision with Lance Stroll, while things were even worse in the Sprint, where the Sauber driver was involved in a dramatic accident on the final lap. Thankfully, the 21-year-old emerged physically unharmed, but he now leads a less flattering ranking.
Since the start of the 2025 season in São Paulo, with three races still to go, Bortoleto tops the list of drivers responsible for the highest economic damage from accidents—entirely unintentional. Factoring in his violent impact with the barriers at the Senna S corner, along with his race retirement, the Swiss team’s repair costs have already reached approximately €3.1 million.
Joining him on the podium is Yuki Tsunoda, with around €2.9 million, and intriguingly, championship leader Lando Norris, mainly due to collisions in Saudi Arabia and Canada, the latter involving his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Other notable names in the top five include Jack Doohan, who missed the Emilia-Romagna GP but suffered a heavy crash in Japan. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Max Verstappen ranks 20th in this “honorary” list, with a relatively minor €200,000 in damages.
