McLaren will stick to papaya rules. Stella: “The approach will remain the same”
Drivers’ title: McLaren stays the course
Winning the Constructors’ Championship will not change McLaren’s approach for the final six race weekends of 2025. With the team title secured, many expected Woking to favor either Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris in order to defend against Max Verstappen’s potential comeback. However, the McLaren team has no plans to do so.
The team will continue to follow the “papaya rules,” giving both drivers equal opportunities. Currently separated by 22 points in the Drivers’ Championship, Max Verstappen is evidently seen as a manageable threat for the moment.
Andrea Stella speaks
“Our approach to the Drivers’ Championship will not change and is independent of the Constructors’ Championship. Our way of racing depends on our principles, the values we uphold, and the desire to protect team unity, which is a fundamental condition for the future,” said team principal Andrea Stella.
“Race situations are certainly open to different interpretations, so we welcome critical comments. What matters is that they remain respectful. Respect is a core value for McLaren, and I am confident it is for everyone,” he added. “It is not surprising that negative comments exist — Formula 1 is a popular sport. We consider them, but ultimately what counts is what we do internally and how we prepare for the future.” – the former Ferrari team member concluded.
