Gabriel Bortoleto has reaffirmed his long-term commitment to Audi as the 2027 Formula 1 driver market begins to take shape during the summer break. While uncertainty surrounds Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz and several seats further down the grid, the Brazilian has made it clear that he believes in Audi’s long-term project and sees his future at Hinwil.
The sound of Formula 1 engines feels like a distant memory during these August days before the championship resumes in the Netherlands next week. The drivers may be enjoying their holidays, but their managers’ phones are unlikely to be quiet. Summer has traditionally been a crucial period for negotiating contracts, with deals often completed behind the scenes before being announced around the beginning of September.
Max Verstappen remains one of the central figures in that process. Whether the four-time World Champion stays with Red Bull, moves elsewhere or eventually steps away from Formula 1 could influence not only the leading seats but also opportunities much further down the grid. The latest developments surrounding his future can be followed in the Max Verstappen news section.
Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov waits for an F1 opportunity
A bottleneck has formed within the Red Bull Junior Team in particular. Nikola Tsolov leads the Formula 2 Championship after six victories and has established himself as one of the strongest candidates for promotion, but the available seats within the Red Bull family are currently occupied.
His most obvious opportunity could emerge if Liam Lawson suffers a significant downturn in performance while Nikola Tsolov maintains his current momentum. A departure by Max Verstappen would potentially make the promotion chain even easier, opening additional movement across Red Bull’s two Formula 1 teams.
Gabriel Bortoleto commits to Audi’s long-term F1 project
There are several other uncertain contracts in the midfield, including that of Carlos Sainz, who is believed to be considering whether Williams can still offer the competitive future he expected when he joined the Grove team.
The Spaniard has reportedly explored the possibility of Audi, but Gabriel Bortoleto’s position appears far more settled. The Brazilian has emphasised that he remains committed to the manufacturer and believes in the long-term objectives established by Audi’s Formula 1 leadership.
“Mattia Binotto is always talking about 2030. It’s a project we really believe in. I believed in it when I joined the team, they believe in my potential, and that’s all I can say,” Gabriel Bortoleto told the Brazilian edition of Motorsport.com.
The comments underline how strongly Audi appears to view Gabriel Bortoleto as part of its future. Mattia Binotto has repeatedly identified 2030 as a major target for the project, and Bortoleto is convinced that the team is building towards that objective rather than expecting immediate success.
Audi sees Bortoleto as a long-term leader
Pairing Gabriel Bortoleto with the vastly experienced Nico Hülkenberg has also helped the Brazilian’s development. Audi has combined youth with experience as it builds its Formula 1 operation, giving Bortoleto the opportunity to learn alongside a driver with more than a decade at the highest level.
The long-term ambition is for Gabriel Bortoleto to mature into one of the leading figures at Hinwil by the time Audi has a package capable of fighting at the front. His own seat appears particularly secure, reducing the number of realistic options available to drivers looking for a change ahead of 2027.
That is particularly relevant to Carlos Sainz. The Williams driver’s future remains uncertain after a disappointing 2026 season, with reports also suggesting that Carlos Sainz could have an exit clause allowing a 2027 move if the right opportunity arises.
Williams’ lack of competitiveness has only increased those questions. James Vowles has already acknowledged that the team’s planned Baku upgrade will not be enough to transform its fortunes, leaving Carlos Sainz to assess how quickly the Grove project can recover.
Alpine and Haas still have questions over their 2027 line-ups
With several opportunities disappearing, much of the remaining uncertainty lies further down the grid. Aston Martin’s disappointing campaign has done little to make it an obvious destination, while Alpine and Haas still have important decisions to make.
At Enstone, Pierre Gasly has a confirmed place, but the identity of his team-mate could once again depend heavily on Flavio Briatore. Franco Colapinto is currently receiving strong backing, although nothing can be considered guaranteed under the watchful eye of the Alpine adviser.
Haas also has decisions to make over its future line-up, particularly regarding Esteban Ocon. The Frenchman’s position has been the subject of speculation, while Oliver Bearman’s strong performances continue to strengthen his reputation.
Oliver Bearman would naturally be interested in a future promotion to Ferrari if an opportunity were to emerge, with Lewis Hamilton’s longer-term decisions potentially influencing that route. For now, however, the 2027 market remains a complex puzzle in which one decision can create several others.
Gabriel Bortoleto appears to have removed himself from that uncertainty by committing to Audi’s long-term vision. Max Verstappen, by contrast, remains the driver capable of triggering the biggest chain reaction of all.
