Fernando Alonso will remain in Formula 1 with Aston Martin in 2027 after signing a new contract with the Silverstone team, while Lance Stroll has also been confirmed alongside him. Aston Martin has therefore chosen continuity despite the difficulties surrounding the AMR26 and the reliability and performance problems experienced with the Honda Power Unit during the 2026 season.
Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin will continue together for at least another year. The two-time Formula 1 world champion has decided to stay despite a campaign that has fallen well short of expectations, with technical setbacks and an AMR26 that has been unable to reach the competitive level initially targeted by the team.
Lance Stroll will once again be Fernando Alonso’s teammate, with Aston Martin announcing his renewal for next season at the same time. Their contract extensions mean the pair will continue together for a fifth consecutive season in 2027.
Fernando Alonso commits to Aston Martin for 2027
It was no secret that Fernando Alonso had taken time to consider what his next step should be. His decision was not simply about whether to remain with Aston Martin while waiting to see how much progress Honda could make, but also whether to continue racing in Formula 1 under a technical regulation package that he has not particularly enjoyed.
In the end, however, Fernando Alonso decided to put his faith in the Aston Martin project and remain on the Formula 1 grid.
“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level,” Fernando Alonso said after confirming his renewal for 2027, which was announced with a light-hearted video in which the Spaniard initially pretended that he was retiring.
“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities. I look forward to making more memories on the racetrack in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”
Aston Martin still battling AMR26 and Honda problems
The decision comes after a difficult development phase for Aston Martin. Delays in bringing the wind tunnel online, together with other delays, affected chassis development and eventually forced the team into a major mid-season intervention aimed at reducing the car’s weight and moving it closer to the midfield.
It was a necessary move, but one that required time and inevitably had an impact on performance. Aston Martin has consequently continued working to recover ground with the AMR26, including the wider development programme behind its major AMR26 evolution package.
The situation has also been influenced by Honda’s difficulties. Beyond the deficit in outright power, the Japanese manufacturer’s Power Unit has also suffered reliability problems. Honda has continued working intensively behind the scenes to close the gap, including through the ADUO development opportunities available in 2026, which need to become an effective tool in the effort to move Aston Martin consistently further up the order.
The challenge remains significant, with Aston Martin and Honda still working to reduce their performance deficit as the team attempts to unlock more of its potential.
Why Fernando Alonso took time over his F1 future
Fernando Alonso has made little attempt to hide his frustration on several occasions during the season, which helps explain why he took time to consider his future. Compared with previous difficult periods, however, the Spaniard has also displayed a different level of calm and clarity, partly because he was evaluating his longer-term plans and his feelings towards Formula 1’s current technical regulations.
His criticism of those regulations has rarely been particularly subtle and inevitably added further uncertainty over whether he would continue racing beyond 2026.
Ultimately, though, the pull of Formula 1 remains difficult to ignore for a driver whose life has revolved around motorsport. Fernando Alonso’s renewal for 2027 is a sign that he still believes Aston Martin can progress and provide him with the opportunity to enjoy competing at the highest level.
For Aston Martin, retaining Fernando Alonso alongside Lance Stroll also provides continuity at a time when the team is still working through significant technical challenges and waiting to discover how far its current project can develop.
