Kimi Antonelli: the new goal after heavy criticism
After a difficult period filled with pressure, Kimi Antonelli found redemption in Baku. The young Mercedes talent, facing the toughest phase of his rookie season, left the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a smile and a renewed sense of determination.
The 19-year-old Italian had endured a series of complicated races in Europe, which culminated in a disappointing performance at Monza. That result even led Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to describe it as “below expectations.” But in Baku, Kimi Antonelli delivered a strong response with a convincing performance, finishing in fourth place on the demanding streets of the Azeri capital.
Competing in his first Formula 1 season, the Bologna-born driver did not hide his satisfaction at completing a weekend without mistakes on one of the trickiest circuits on the calendar. “After all the criticism and the difficult moments, we managed to bring home a good result. Now the most important thing is to make sure this becomes consistent until the end of the year,” Antonelli said.
Antonelli acknowledged that the Baku layout, with its extremely tight margins for error, was a real test of maturity. At the same time, it offered him the chance to prove that he could handle the pressure. His goal is now clear: not to settle for a single positive weekend, but to build a string of solid performances that can strengthen his position at Mercedes.
The future at Mercedes
Kimi Antonelli’s contract for the 2026 Formula 1 season has not yet been officially confirmed, nor has that of his current teammate George Russell. However, all indications from Brackley suggest that the team intends to keep both drivers for the long term. For Antonelli, this makes the second half of the 2025 season crucial in proving that he deserves a permanent place in Mercedes’ long-term project.
With his new objective set, Antonelli knows that every race will serve as a test of maturity. The challenge now is to turn criticism into a springboard for growth and to establish himself once and for all as a rising star in Formula 1.
