Franco Colapinto completed an impressive Spanish Grand Prix comeback by finishing seventh for Alpine in Madrid, putting his Monza mistake firmly behind him with one of his strongest performances of the 2026 Formula 1 season. A superb start and consistently strong race pace allowed the Argentine to beat his direct rivals and even keep Oscar Piastri’s McLaren behind him after a difficult weekend for the Australian.
The result also carried significance beyond Colapinto’s personal recovery. Alpine reduced its deficit to Racing Bulls in the Constructors’ Championship to just nine points, while the number 43 driver continued a run of increasingly convincing performances in the A526.
Franco Colapinto celebrates one of his best F1 performances
Colapinto was delighted with a weekend in which he had already impressed in qualifying before converting that pace into a strong race result.
“I’m very happy with this result. I was among the best, and I think it was one of my best days in F1, especially in qualifying, which I think was the best I’ve done this season,” Franco Colapinto said.
“Today, on the other hand, I had a good start, gained several positions and then began my fight for the points.”
The opening laps proved particularly important. Colapinto immediately made progress through the field before becoming involved in a close battle with Gabriel Bortoleto, which cost the Alpine driver valuable time.
Colapinto survives close Bortoleto fight and holds off Oscar Piastri
Colapinto highlighted his battle with Bortoleto as one of the most intense parts of his Spanish Grand Prix, with the pair coming close to contact on more than one occasion.
“I lost a huge amount of time with Gabi, who was doing Turns 1 and 2 very well. We came very close to touching a couple of times, but fortunately it didn’t happen,” the Argentine explained.
Despite that delay, Colapinto maintained his position and was also able to keep Piastri behind in the closing stages. The McLaren driver had struggled throughout the Madrid weekend and was unable to find a way past the Alpine.
“I’m happy that I was also able to defend from Oscar [Piastri]. This seventh place is really wonderful,” Colapinto added.
The P7 finish represented a valuable result for Alpine at an important stage of the midfield battle, while also confirming the improved confidence Colapinto has shown in recent races.
Marshal gives Colapinto Argentine flag after Madrid finish
There was also a special moment after the chequered flag that largely escaped attention during the immediate post-race celebrations. On his cooldown lap, a marshal handed Colapinto an Argentine flag, which the Alpine driver proudly waved for almost half a lap of the Madring circuit.
The gesture clearly meant a great deal to Colapinto, who publicly thanked the compatriot who had waited trackside to give him the flag.
“Being able to carry an Argentine flag on a Formula 1 car for the second time — I had also carried it in Argentina — but now carrying it here in a real race, after a good result, is very special,” Franco Colapinto said.
“A marshal gave it to me and he was waiting for me to hand it over. I thank him so much for this gesture.”
For Colapinto, the moment provided an emotional conclusion to an already memorable afternoon. Seventh place delivered valuable points for Alpine, strengthened his recent run of form and offered the perfect response to the disappointment of Monza — before an Argentine flag completed one of his most satisfying Formula 1 weekends of the year.
