Franco Colapinto at a crossroads in Formula 1
The relationship between Franco Colapinto and Alpine has never truly flourished. The Argentine driver has struggled to meet the expectations of the Enstone-based team and the trust placed in him by Flavio Briatore, leaving his future with the team increasingly uncertain. The German publication Auto Motor und Sport has confirmed what had already been reported in previous weeks: removing any uncertainty, they state with confidence that Franco Colapinto’s tenure as a full-time Alpine driver will end at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
This scenario aligns with the driver market reality, given his current performance levels, and is consistent with statements made by the CEO of Renault Argentina, Pablo Sibilla, who confirmed that Colapinto’s contract extends only through the end of 2025. Notably, Franco Colapinto is the only full-time driver on the current grid with zero points in the World Championship and has repeatedly disrupted team operations with avoidable incidents.
A key factor pushing Alpine toward the separation was the crash during the Pirelli tests at the Hungaroring on August 6. Fortunately, the accident did not result in injury to Franco Colapinto, who was immediately examined at the medical center. However, the crash caused significant damage to the car and disrupted both the team’s and the Milan-based manufacturer’s development plans.
After a Formula 1 journey marked by highs and lows with Williams, followed by a largely disappointing stint at Alpine, Franco Colapinto’s future in F1 is increasingly uncertain, despite having strong sponsorship backing. Should he be left without a seat for 2026, the #43 driver could potentially explore opportunities in the IndyCar Series or the World Endurance Championship, where his talent and experience may find a more suitable environment for growth and success.
