“I don’t listen to these individuals; I just do my thing. I’m a three-time world champion. I think I know what I’m doing. I have my opinions, and I don’t need to share them.”
This was Max Verstappen’s response to Damon Hill’s sharp criticism following the Mexican Grand Prix, on the eve of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend at the 4.309-kilometre Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Brazil. The former British driver, now a TV commentator and analyst, had accused the Dutchman of not being able to race fairly with his rivals.
However, faced with the incredible performance by the ace from Hasselt just days ago, even Damon Hill could do nothing but applaud and tip his hat.
“It was absolutely one of his best (victories),” commented the 1996 Formula 1 world champion to Sky Sport at the end of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
“I mean, this is one of those performances we had anticipated at the start. Maybe this would have been the day when he could show everyone his brilliance, and today he did it in the most complete way. What a transformation from qualifying, when we first talked. I never said he’s not a great driver; it’s absolutely impossible,” Damon Hill then clarified in response to the recent controversy.
“He won in an entirely clean way. He climbed up the standings and showed everyone why he’s such a brilliant driver and will become a four-time world champion.”
With the 18 points gained over Lando Norris, Max Verstappen now has the chance to seal the title in the next race in Las Vegas. The Dutchman only needs to cross the finish line ahead of his rival to be crowned Formula 1 world champion for the fourth consecutive time.
