Montoya: “Alonso at Alpine? He has a better chance of winning with Aston Martin”
Speculation surrounding Fernando Alonso’s future continues to dominate the Formula 1 driver market, with the possibility of a sensational fourth spell at Enstone emerging as one of the hottest topics in the paddock. The Spaniard famously won his two world championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006, and rumours of a return to what is now Alpine have intensified in recent weeks.
Montoya would stay where he is
The Formula 1 driver market has produced very few surprises in 2026, just as it did in 2025, when most drivers chose to remain with their current teams while waiting to see how the new technical regulations would reshape the competitive order.
Charles Leclerc has already committed his future to Ferrari, while George Russell is also expected to remain with Mercedes. With the most attractive seats effectively off the market, much of the attention has shifted to Fernando Alonso and the possibility of what would become a fourth chapter in his long relationship with the Enstone-based team.
Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya, however, believes he would not make that move if he were in Alonso’s position. In his view, Aston Martin still represents the stronger long-term opportunity for a return to the top step of the podium.
“If I had to bet on which of the two teams is more likely to win, I would choose Aston Martin because it has a greater chance of success than Alpine,” Montoya told BetVictor. “Alpine has done an extraordinary job this year. But Adrian Newey will make the difference. With him in the team, you can win everything.”
The Colombian believes Aston Martin’s potential remains higher despite Alpine’s encouraging progress during the current campaign.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Aston Martin ends up beating Alpine by the end of the year. But the difficult thing for Fernando is that he’ll probably have to make a decision before then.”
