Out of the standings
In two races held in 2025, Fernando Alonso has yet to see the chequered flag even once. This is the bitter balance the Spanish veteran is currently facing, dreaming of the upcoming technical regulation changes and Adrian Newey’s arrival, but for now, he must swallow the bitter pill of being ‘out of the standings.’ The Aston Martin driver – not having finished even one Grand Prix yet – is not currently in the Drivers’ Championship standings, which only consider those who have finished at least one race.
Of course, it’s a purely ‘technical’ detail, but it clearly reflects the difficult moment that the two-time world champion, along with his entire team, is going through. In China, his Sunday lasted barely four laps before he had to stop due to a brake issue. This is a sign that there’s still a lot of work to be done at Lawrence Stroll’s team, starting with reliability.
A long and difficult season
With the usual honesty and bluntness that characterize him, Fernando Alonso hasn’t hidden the complicated moment he is going through and, in fact, speaking with Spanish media, he gave a heads-up. When asked after the race, the #14 from Oviedo hinted at a season full of difficult Sundays for him and his fans: “The zeros may become a habit this year,” he said. “There are the top four teams, then AlphaTauri (yes, he called it that, after referring to it as ‘Toro Rosso’ on Saturday), and Williams are clearly ahead of us.” – the former Ferrari driver pointed out at the end of the Chinese Grand Prix.
An Aston Martin, therefore, as the seventh-best team in the Championship, according to Fernando Alonso, and in fact, the first signs of this season point in that direction. Not to mention Haas, which collected points in Shanghai with both drivers. 2026 could be the year of ‘liberation’ for Fernando Alonso, but this 2025 Formula 1 campaign is shaping up to be a very long and challenging one for him.
