New perspectives for Aston Martin
Lawrence Stroll has spared no expense in creating a top-notch technical team with the goal of revitalizing Aston Martin and making it a reference point in Formula 1. First, Andy Cowell, then Enrico Cardile, and finally the heavyweight, Adrian Newey, who had received offers from much of the grid, led by Ferrari.
Fernando Alonso has followed his team’s recruitment campaign with great interest and still hopes to achieve that elusive 33rd victory and, why not, his third world title, after those won in 2005 and 2006. The Spaniard, who turned 43 last July, renewed his contract in April and will be on track for at least another two years, according to his recent statements.
Fernando Alonso and Adrian Newey
In a long interview published on his team’s official website, Fernando Alonso spoke about his future concerning Adrian Newey’s arrival: “Have my prospects changed? I would be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it. Adrian will arrive in March 2025 and will focus on 2026, so we’ll see how I feel at the end of ’26, and we’ll evaluate whether I can continue. It will be a decision we make together as a team, with Lawrence and Adrian.”
Fernando Alonso also discussed the significance of being in a single-seater designed by the British engineer: “For me, it will be an incredible opportunity; driving one of his F1 cars is something very special. When you work with people of his caliber, you can learn a lot, and it’s extremely rewarding.” The Asturian then added an interesting backstory about a message he sent to Newey to persuade him to join Aston Martin: “I was hoping he would join us when he left his previous team. I was asking Lawrence and Martin Whitmarsh for news to see if we had contacted him. Eventually, I got his phone number and texted him: ‘What a surprise! If you’re looking for a new challenge, I would love to work with you one day.’” – he revealed.
The former Ferrari and McLaren driver then continued: “Only later did I find out that Adrian and Lawrence were in contact, and I was kept updated on the negotiations. When Adrian chose us, I was very happy and also very proud. I believe this demonstrates what Lawrence is capable of; only he can achieve certain things. His vision and passion for motorsport are limitless; he’s an inspiration to all of us,” Fernando Alonso explained, adding: “The 33rd victory is certainly closer with Adrian than without him. But I’m aware of my situation, and I hope to still be here to drive a fast car designed by Adrian. But if he doesn’t arrive in time, it will still be fun because I will still be part of the team and part of this exciting journey with Aston Martin.” – the Spaniard concluded.
